  • The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) announced Raquel Egusquiza as the new strategy officer to lead association’s work with the Hispanic 50+ community. As the leader of Hispanic outreach, she will be responsible in planning and executing AARP’s work to promote positive social change within diverse communities and deliver value to all AARP members. She joins AARP from the Ford Motor Company Fund, where she most recently served as director of community development and international strategy. In this capacity, she also led external initiatives focused on reaching minority communities including American Indian, Hispanic and women. Egusquiza serves on the Board of Directors of the Girl Scouts of the USA; the Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute; and SER Jobs for Progress.

M. Isabel Becerra
M. Isabel Becerra has been announced by the Board of Directors of The California Wellness Foundation (TCWF) as a new board member. She is the chief executive officer of the Coalition of Orange County Community Clinics. The Coalition represents 19 federally qualified health centers (FQHCs), federally funded community health centers (CHCs), FQHC look-alike clinics, and free clinics at 40 sites throughout the county that provide health care to low-income and uninsured populations. Previously, Becerra’s extensive community health center career focused on Section 330 FQHCs in San Diego, Seattle and Orange County, where her primary responsibilities included program planning, operations, health policy and development activities at various community health centers. “Isabel and Elisabeth will bring new perspectives and diverse experiences to our mission of improving the health of the people of California,” said the foundation’s president and CEO, Gary L. Yates.

Becerra appreciates the Board’s understanding of the important role that community clinics play as “high-quality, cost-effective, and culturally competent health care providers for the most vulnerable populations among us.”


Elizabeth M. Gomez
The Board of Directors of the California Wellness Foundation (TCWF) recently announced the appointment of Elizabeth M. Gomez as the new chair. Gomez, who joined the Board in 2005, is executive director and a board member of the Los Angeles Youth Network (LAYN). LAYN provides homeless, runaway and high-risk youth with shelter, food and counseling services. Prior to joining LAYN in 1989, she was assistant director of youth services for Traveler’s Aid Society of Los Angeles’ Teen Canteen.
She is actively involved in the leadership of numerous youth-serving, philanthropic, civic and community organizations and serves on the boards of the California Coalition for Youth and the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. Previously, she was a commissioner for the California State Commission on Juvenile Justice, Crime and Delinquency Prevention. “We are aware this will be a challenging year for the Foundation,” she said. “The Board will continue to work diligently to provide the leadership the Foundation needs, and to continue to promote the health of those in need in the state of California.”


Laura Diaz-Brown
Laura Diaz-Brown (known internationally to fans as Chef La La) has been chosen by the board of directors of the Mexican American Opportunity Foundation (MAOF) as the recipient of the 2009 National Hispanic Woman of the Year Award. This culinary and entrepreneurial woman has become a renowned chef, author, food consultant, nutritionist, speaker and business women running her own catering company. She has devoted her life to mastering and refining the art of cooking and educating her audience on how to enjoy cultural cuisine in a healthy way. She also supports health and multicultural health education through her work with the American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association, the Liver Foundation, Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. Among her awards she received the Macy’s Community Star Award’ and General Mills’ “Corazon de Comunidad” (Heart of the Community) award.

She has reached exemplary achievements and is considered a positive role model for Hispanic women of all ages. As honoree, she will be recognized for the contributions made in her business and award-winning culinary career at the 33rd Annual National Women’s Conference on May 22, 2009 at the Pasadena Convention Center in Pasadena California.
