Following an outstanding career in the law, communications and making-policies areas, Ruth Noemi Col贸n was recently appointed Acting Secretary of Stat

Ruth Noem铆 Col贸n.
She has been working within the Department of State since 2006 executing different positions: Special Counsel for the former Secretary, Executive Director of the New York Athletic Commission and Director of Public Affairs, to name a few.

Col贸n has professionally grown over the past 20 years serving in senior positions for the Puerto Rican government; working as a Deputy Director for Communications at the New York City Housing Authority, and being a liaison to the New York City Mayor鈥檚 Office. This last role allowed her to advocate for the Latino community.

Col贸n obtained her degrees from the University of Puerto Rico and the Pace Law School. As a community supporter, she is currently member of the Westchester Women鈥檚 Bar Association and has been named one of 50 Outstanding Latinas by El Diario-La Prensa.

Lidia S. Martinez

Born in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua and raised in El Paso, Texas, Lidia S. Martinez began her career at Southwest Airlines in 1990 as the receptionist for the vice president of Marketing. Today, Martinez serves as the company鈥檚 manager, Community Affairs & Grassroots overseeing Southwest's community efforts in the West Coast, with national community partners in New York City, and Washington D.C. In addition, Martinez serves on various national and state Boards. She is the Immediate Past Chair of MANA National Board of Directors. Until recently, she served as the Vice Chair for the Los Angeles-based National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC). She also serves on the California State University Foundation Board of Governors, and the Board of Directors of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI), LEAD San Diego, to name a few.

In The News Lidia Soto-Harmon

After six years serving as Chief Operating Officer (COO) for the Girl Scout Council of the Nation鈥檚 Capital (GSCNC), Soto-Harmon was recognized for her hard work and creative engagement by being appointed as CEO. The non-profit organization serves over 90,000 girls in the Greater Washington Region. She expressed being honored by the President鈥檚 decision since this will allow her to keep helping youth. 鈥淏y being a part of the Girl Scouts, countless generations of young women develop the leadership skills and the spirit of service that will help them bring positive change to our world,鈥 she said.

Before her involvement with the GSCNC, the innovative leader worked for 25 years in all three sectors: non-profit, corporate and the government. In one of her roles as deputy director of the President鈥檚 Interagency Council in the U.S. Department of State, Soto-Harmon was able to develop policies in pro of women and children around the world. She also participated in campaigns aimed to help affected groups, such as immigrants. Soto-Harmon obtained her Masters degree in Public Administration from George Mason University and a B.A. from Drew University.

Continually, more Latinas are being highly recognized in the academic area. Rachel Moran has been selected as the eighth dean of UCLA School of California, Berkeley, School of Law, a top-ranked university in the U.S. She will be assuming the role on mid-October as the first Latina ever to achieve such title. 鈥淚 am very pleased to welcome Rachel Moran to the UCLA community,鈥 expressed Chancellor Gene Block when announcing the news. 鈥淚 am confident the School of Law will continue to thrive with her visionary leadership.鈥

The faculty member since 1983 went to Stanford to fulfill her undergraduate education. Later she completed Law School in Yale. Ever since, Moran has worked at the University of California, Irvine and School of Law, as a founder faculty member; as well as a professor in UCLA Law, Stanford Law School, New York University School of Law, the University of Miami Law School, and the University of Texas as a professor. Being an expert on education law and policy, family law and civil rights, Moran has successfully published a number of titles related to these fields.
