Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF)
On June 17, MALDEF, a leading Latino legal civil rights organization, promoting social change through advocacy, communications, community education, and litigation in the areas of education, employment, immigrant rights, and political access hosted its awards gala in Chicago, IL at the Hyatt Regency. The awards gala recognized individuals, corporations, and law firms who have been instrumental in advancing justice for Latinos.

National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ)
On June 23-26, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) held its 28th Annual NAHJ Multimedia Convention & Career Expo, themed: “NAHJ en Denver: El Grito Across the Rockies” in Denver, Colorado. The National Association of Hispanic Journalists answers the call for change and assisted hundreds meet the challenge. The conference has been one of the industry’s leading journalism events, and is a fertile training ground and a premiere networking hub for more than 1,000 influential Latino journalists, media executives and key political figures.

National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO)
The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) held its 27th annual conference themed “The 2010 Latino Political Convention” in Denver, Colorado from June 24-26. Critical information on issues affecting their constituents and the Latino community today enables policymakers and other stakeholders to address these challenges and serve their communities with the tools and information to truly make a difference. The conference provided access to the nation’s top executive and legislative leaders.

Hispanic Leadership Awards
The National Capital Area Council (NCAC), Boy Scouts of America (BSA) honored three locally and nationally recognized members of the Hispanic community at its 2nd Annual Hispanic Leadership Awards dinner held June 30. Proceeds from the event, this year held at the Marriott Washington at Metro Center, will support the outreach programs of NCAC as part of its current strategic plan to grow membership in underserved and minority communities Congressman Charles A. Gonzalez (TX-20) was honored with the National Public Service Award, Arlington County Board Member J. Walter Tejada was honored with the Community Public Service Award and Orion Enterprises President, Principal and Founder Joseph A. Reyes received the Business Visionary Award. All honorees were chosen because they are visionaries who have demonstrated leadership across the nation.

League of United Latin American Citizens-LULAC
On July 12-17, the League of United Latin American Citizens held its 81st Annual LULAC National Convention and Exposition in Albuquerque, New Mexico themed “New Strategies for Community Empowerment: New Leadership through Action.” The nation’s top leaders including U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda L. SolĂs; New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson; U.S. Treasurer Rosie RĂos; NAACP President Ben Jealous; and Congressmen Ben Luján, Silvestre Reyes, Joe Baca and Martin Heinrich among many others were present. Over 70 workshops and seminars informed and inspired many to tackle some of the pressing issues facing the Latino community including immigration, health care, education, employment, the environment, technology, civil rights, financial planning, and civic engagement.

National Council of La Raza- NCLR
On July 10-13, the National Council of La Raza hosted its annual conference and the National Latino Family Expo in San Antonio, TX. The four day conference represented many influential individuals, organizations, institutions, and companies working with the Hispanic community. The NCLR annual conference provided a forum for people in the business of social change to learn about ongoing and emerging issues in the Hispanic community, connect with key community leaders, and generate partnerships with Hispanic community-based organizations. The conference consisted of cutting-edge workshops addressing critical issues in the Hispanic community, five key meal events before an audience of 2,000, and presentations from speakers of national and international prominence.
