It seems that every time I get ready to write this message there is yet another calamity to report. This time is the disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, where the oil continues to pour out of what is left of the Deep Horizon platform. Our hearts and hopes are with the people of Louisiana that have endured so much already. They are on the front line of this battle but this is bigger than just them, every state in the region will be affected. This is a region where Hispanic small businesses have thrived and now are in serious peril. The quality of life for all the families that depend on tourism, fishing, or the oil industry will be severely tested. The confrontation between the states, the federal government, individuals, and BP, will set the tone for the way the future energy development in our country will proceed. Stay tuned for unending congressional investigations, bills, penalties and litigation. This in the end will affect all of us as we refocus on legislation regarding the development of energy. On a much happier note we are delighted to bring you some insights on how Latina corporate working moms are performing their difficult act of creating some life balance between work, family and personal life. I know that many of you are facing the same challenges every day. Moms, we want you to know that you are not forgotten heroes but the everyday role models and leaders that enrich our families, communities and our country. The Latina Moms writing this story also know that they are but a small representation of what all of you do every day to keep our families afloat and prosper. Your success reinforces our belief that Latinas are the masters of perseverance and hard work. They perform all these critical duties without winning, complaining and asking: why me? They just do it. Our cover is graced by Laura Nieto and her daughter Anna Sobeida and they make a beautiful picture but it could have been any of the mothers we profile in the story. Thank you Moms for all you do! We also continue our review of the U.S. intelligence agencies and their efforts to improve diversity in their ranks. It is a difficult task but one that is essential and a top priority for House Intelligence committee chairman, Congressman Sylvestre Reyes. We will continue to report on them and the Federal Agencies throughout the year. Much work needs to done. Two outstanding military Latinas were honored these past few days. US Navy Captain Kathy Contres retired after 30 years of distinguished service. She has been an incredible inspiration to us and to all who have come in contact with her. We wish her well in her new endeavors. And finally, we are proud to announce that Angie Salinas has received her second star becoming a Major General in the U.S. Marine Corps, the highest Latina in the service. Another milestone in a stellar career. Robert E. Bard
