LATINA Style, Inc. celebrated the last stop of the 2017 Annual LATINA Style Business Series Tour in San Diego, CA, on Friday, November 17th at the San Diego Marriott Del Mar hotel. Marking its 129th stop, the award-winning program for Latina entrepreneurs kicked-off with a networking breakfast and opening remarks from title sponsor Lory Burgos, Sr. Consultant, Enterprise Diverse Marketing, Nationwide, and ANSO member Edgar Guerrero, former Navy Pilot and Veteran.
Over 200 Latinas and professionals attended the series chaired by Linda Caballero Sotelo. Caballero Sotelo is the Executive Director of New Americans Museum (NAM), a visual arts and oral histories institution whose mission is to celebrate and educate about the contributions of all immigrants post WWII into the American narrative.
The first workshop, Accessing Capital: Building Strong Businesses was moderated by Maria P. Hughes, Lead Lender Relations Specialist of San Diego Small Business Administration. Speakers included Mimi McLennan, Vice President, District Manager, Comerica Bank; Rosalinda Delgado, Lead Business Development Officer, ACCION San Diego, and Katie Williams, Senior Stakeholder Liaison, IRS. “It was a wonderful event and I really enjoyed meeting so many empowered women,” says Hughes.
The second panel, Successful Marketing Strategies: Promote Your Business and Yourself was moderated by Therese Cisneros-Remington, Owner W.I.N. Consulting, Palomar College Marketing/Business/Grant Advisor GEAR UP Partnership Program. Panelists included Dora Lorenzo, Director, Diversity Marketing, AT&T Entertainment Group; Veronica Alcantara, Sales Applications Engineer Solar Turbines, SHPE San Diego President, and Adrienne Cisneros-Selekman, President, Nex Gen Sustainable Solutions, Inc. Presenters shared their personal and professional marketing strategies they have implemented within their respective professions to achieve maximum success. “If you are not wiggling, you are not going to places,” states Lorenzo as she elaborates on the importance of mentorship, self-esteem, confidence and shared simple, yet successful social media campaigns.
Tayde Aburto, President & CEO, Hispanic Chamber of E-Commerce presented the Instagram Marketing for Business and Professionals session sponsored by Nationwide and shared valuable tips on do’s and don’ts on social media.
The flagship panel, Entrepreneur Spotlight: Learning Strategies for Success was moderated by Ivette Mayo, President and Chief Creative Officer of Yo Soy I Am, LLC, founder of POWER on HEELS Network. Speakers included award-winning author, influencer and entrepreneur Maritere (Mari) Rodriguez Bellas, and Angelica Grace Velasquez, President, NLBWA SD, Owner, Good Grace Consulting.
“The Business Series is a collective of entrepreneurs, resources, industries, organizations, and energetic people,” says Mayo. “I love being in the room because the energy focused on making Latina business owners successful.”
LATINA Style honored Gabriela Dow, Owner, Mora Dow Consulting, as the LATINA Style Entrepreneur of the Year for San Diego. Dow is an entrepreneur and consultant based in San Diego who works with government agencies, global corporations, national firms and tech startups. Her specialty is modernization and innovation, helping public agencies implement emerging technologies. This award is presented to Latinas who demonstrate the core values of entrepreneurship. “What an honor, thank you so much for the recognition,” says Dow.
During the luncheon ceremony, Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher, District 80, delivered the keynote message. The business series counted on the presence of Deputy Director Michael Sena from the DoD Office of Diversity Management & Equal Opportunity; Radio personality Mery Lopez Gallo, Community Empowerment Manager, Univision Communications Inc., served as mistress of ceremonies, and Kevin Cortes, ANSO Vice President and Founder, San Diego Veterans Ball.
Azucena Maldonado, President, Latina Golfers Association along with Vivian Ricarte Sayward, Founder & Chief Enthusiastic Officer, Vivacity Sportswear, presented “Break the Glass Ceiling with a Golf Ball.”
“The caliber of women attending the LATINA Style Business Series in San Diego was exceptional. The conference gave me the opportunity to engage with professionals who are poised to take advantage of the Latina Golfers Association’s message to “Shatter the Glass Ceiling with a Golf Ball,” says Maldonado. “I think we’ve achieved our goal of demystifying golf for the audience so they can learn to utilize golf as a business tool and to break down cultural and gender barriers in order to enhance their professional careers. We had a “hole in one” day and had so much fun with our golf attire fashion show highlighting Latina entrepreneurs, showcasing Latina Golfer Ricarte Sayward’s latest collection.
