On Monday, June 19, 2017, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, right, administered the oath of office to Jovita Carranza, left, as the 44th Treasurer of the U.S. at the Treasury Department in Washington D.C. Jovita Carranza’s daughter Klaudene Carranze, holds the Bible and her goddaughter Lily Hobbs stands third from left.

In this issue we are delighted to profile Veteran NASA astronaut Ellen Ochoa, Ph.D., the first Hispanic woman to go into space. Her story is an inspiration to all of us, she is a Latina who has reached the pinnacle of her career. She has flown into space four times, the first time aboard the Discovery Space Shuttle discovery in 1993. She now serves as the 11th director of NASA’s Johnson Space Center and its second woman director. She is the recipient of numerous awards and was recently inducted into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame, probably the most select club in our country.

Jovita Carranza becomes the 44th Treasurer of the United States and the seventh Latina to hold this position. She also becomes the highest-ranking Latina in the Trump administration. With a wealth of experience in corporate America, as a small business owner and her service on the board of directors of SCORE, to name a few, we are sure she will shine as our Treasurer. She was sworn in by Secretary of the Treasury Steven T. Mnuchin accompanied by her daughter Klaudene Carranza and her goddaughter Lily Hobbs. We wish her the very best and we are looking forward to seeing her signature on our dollar bills.

Raquel Tamez takes the reins at the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), as the new CEO. As the leader of one of our most important professional development organizations in the country, Raquel will play a significant role on our community’s success in tackling the STEM issue and the careers of the future. You can meet her in person at the SHPE National Conference this coming November in Kansas City.

We began our 19th LATINA Style> Business Series Tour in Dallas this past June 15th and 16th hosted by AT&T and with the continuing partnership with Nationwide. It was a huge success and we will be looking for you at our next conference in Charlotte, NC on July 21st and 22nd.

We would also like to congratulate Allen Gutierrez on his recent appointment as Associate Administrator at the U.S. Small Business Administration. You can learn about our new U.S. Small Business Administrator Linda McMahon’s vision for the agency in this edition. We are greatly encouraged by her efforts to support, promote and empower small businesses in our country. We wish you a great summer.
