Congressman Silvestre Reyes to be honored with the President’s Leadership Award Recognition

Washington, D.C. – August 20, 2012 – The Anna Maria Arias Foundation in partnership with LATINA Style Inc., the premier company addressing the needs of Latina professionals, civic leaders, entrepreneurs, college students and members of the Armed Services are proud to present the 9th Annual National LATINA Symposium.  The Symposium will be held on Thursday, September 6, 2012 from 7:30 am – 3:00 pm at the Hilton Crystal City Hotel (2399 Jefferson Davis Hwy. Arlington, VA  22202). This event will provide a national platform for Latina professionals to address the most pressing issues affecting the Hispanic woman in the United States.

The National LATINA Symposium opens with a ceremonial breakfast, followed by a series of workshops that will allow participants learn about such issues as: advancement in the workplace, successful leadership, applying military skills to everyday life and business, and professional development. These groundbreaking workshops will feature some of the most prominent military and civilian Latina Leaders in the nation.

The highlight of the event is the Distinguished Military Service Award Luncheon, co-hosted with the Department of Defense. LATINA Style is proud to present the only national awards program honoring Latina military and civilian personnel who through their service have enhanced the role of Latinas in their organizations.  The luncheon will also be the stage for the presentation of the President’s Leadership Award to the Honorable Congressman Silvestre Reyes of the 16th district in Texas. Congressman Reyes will be recognized for his Lifetime Achievements in leadership and in service to our country.

Congressman Reyes has dedicated four decades to public service starting in 1966 when he entered the Army. The congressman is combat veteran, having fought in the Vietnam War as a helicopter crew chief.  Since coming to Congress, The Honorable Reyes has been a strong advocate for the men and women of America’s Armed Forces.  He also cofounded the Congressional USO Caucus to support our troops and their families. Congressman Reyes has been a member of the House Armed Services Committee, and he was a senior Member of the Subcommittee on Readiness which oversees military readiness, training, logistics and maintenance, military construction, family housing, and the base closure process. Congressman Reyes is Co-Chair of the House Congressional Southwest Border Caucus and Co-Chair of the House Army Caucus. He and his wife, Carolina, have been married for more than 40 years and have three children: Monica, Rebecca and Silvestre, Jr. They are also the proud grandparents of Amelia, Mateo, Julian, and Orlando.

In addition, this year, we are proud to launch a four city tour to help military veterans transition into Corporate America. The Initiative helps military veterans transition into the civilian workplace. Created in the spirit of empowerment for our nation’s finest, the Initiative honors and celebrates past and present servicemen’s accomplishments and strives to provide resources for their success.  The LATINA Style HERO Initiative will be held from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Chesapeake Hall.
