SAN ANTONIO HISPANIC CHAMBER OF COMMERCE NAMES MARINA GONZALES AS NEW PRESIDENT & CEO

South Texas native will assume the role in mid-August
The San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (SAHCC) Board of Directors announced Marina Gonzales as the new President and Chief Executive Officer of the 91-year-old organization. A native of South Texas, Gonzales, who most recently served as President and CEO of Child Advocates San Antonio (CASA) brings a diverse background in public policy, advocacy, strategic planning, fundraising and business development to the role.

From drive-thru sites to outdoor hospital tents: As coronavirus spreads in the DMV, more testing sites are being set up. Here’s where you can find them.
DC: George Washington University
George Washington University announced that the hospital has set up a tent at its Foggy Bottom campus for those in the District to be tested.
The tent, according to officials, will be used for COVID-19-suspected patients that medical officials anticipate discharging. Critical cases of the virus will be admitted into the hospital, officials said.
United Medical Center – United Medical Center, the District’s public hospital in Southeast D.C., has added a separate emergency department waiting room and isolated spaces for patients who report to the hospital with flu-like symptoms.

Gov. Larry Hogan announced on March 17 plans to re-purpose vehicle emissions sites as coronavirus testing sites. In our area, here’s a list of drive-thru testing sites across Montgomery and Prince George’s County:

In its 11th consecutive year, the LATINA Style Corporate Executive of the Year award honors influential Latinas, selected by their peers, as leaders and examples the Hispanic community and for the professional women in the U.S. Each year LATINA Style Inc. recognizes the achievement and dedication Latinas are performing at the top of their respective companies and in various industries.

Cantu-Kelley is the Director HR of Planning and Staff Operations for the office of the CHRO & Chief Diversity Officer at Sprint. She is responsible for leading financial management for the HR organization, supporting transformation efforts and planning/operations. Her responsibilities include accountability for key operational leadership team support, financial management, performance measurement processes, action item follow-up/tracking, coordination of operational objectives, work plans, timelines and leading strategic projects involving cross-functional teams.
Cantu-Kelley also leads the Diversity and Inclusion efforts for the seven Employee Resource Groups at Sprint. She is responsible for driving membership engagement, officer’s professional development, executing on business objectives, and community outreach/partnerships.

This year, Pratt & Whitney Hispanic Leadership Forum was honored as the Top Employee Resource Group of the Year. Carla Lopez, ERG President / Global Supply Chain COE Specialist at UTC – Pratt & Whitney, has had many roles in global supply chain, such as account specialist, supplier quality engineer, supplier development lead, materials and strategic sourcing manager. She’s currently finishing her time in the Global Supply Chain Leadership Development Program at United Technologies Corporation – Pratt & Whitney. In July, Carla will graduate the rotational program and begin a role as a Project Lead for the Global Supply Chain Center of Excellence. She is the President of the Pratt & Whitney Hispanic Leadership Forum and has served in the roles of Secretary (2018) and Communications Co-Lead (2017). Carla is pursuing her MBA at Indiana University, Kelly School of Business.

DFW HISPANIC 100 TO HONOR LUPITA COLMENERO AND REBECCA ACUÑA

Awardees to receive Latina Living Legend & Emerging Latina Leader Awards  

DALLAS, TX – September 10, 2019 – The DFW Hispanic 100, a network of Dallas/Ft. Worth area Hispanic women leaders working to increase business and leadership opportunities for Latinas, will honor Lupita Colmenero with its 2019 Latina Living Legend (LLL) Award and Rebecca Acuña with its inaugural Emerging Latina Leader Award (ELLA).

The LLL award recognizes the lifetime commitment of a DFW area Latina who has distinguished herself through her profession, active community and civic participation, volunteerism, and/or philanthropic endeavors.

“Lupita has dedicated a lifetime to helping to change the narrative of the Hispanic community through mass media,” said Lucinda Rocha, President of the DFW Hispanic 100. “She celebrated our culture before doing so was popular, and used her publications to create positive role models for our families. In helping Latino owned businesses and publications thrive, Lupita has helped our families to thrive. She has touched the lives of not only those close to her, but also countless others who have been moved by her words.”

Lupita Colmenero is the Co-Founder and Publisher of El Hispano News, the oldest Spanish language newspaper in North Texas, as well as the Executive Vice President of LATINA Style Inc., the first national magazine dedicated to the needs Latina professionals. A nationally respected expert on parenting and educational issues, Colmenero serves as the President and Founder of Parents Step Ahead, a Dallas-based nonprofit which engages parents in their children’s educational development and has served more than 50,000 families to date. She has served on numerous nonprofit boards, including the Cuban National Council and the National Association on Corporate Responsibility. In 2005 she was the first woman elected President of the National Association of Hispanic Publications Inc., where she championed the cause of minority-owned businesses and prioritized training and mentoring Hispanic publications.

The ELLA award recognizes a Latina professional making an impact on women and girls through her engagement and leadership in her community and profession.

“Rebecca deeply believes in mentorship and aims to knock down obstacles for the next generation,” added Rocha. “She aims to create the personal and professional networks to help others thrive both in her corporate role and in her community efforts. Her volunteer efforts are centered on her passion of leveling the political playing field for women and communities of color.”

Rebecca Acuña is a Director of Government Affairs for PepsiCo where she represents the global portfolio of food and beverage brands before public policy makers and opinion leaders in seven states. Prior to joining PepsiCo, she was the Executive Director of the Latino Center for Leadership Development. Rebecca has also served in leadership roles in political campaigns and federal and state government in Washington, D.C. and Texas. A veteran of the Texas State capitol, Rebecca has served as a Chief of Staff and Communications Director for three members of the Texas House of Representatives and one Member of Congress. She was the first Latina tapped as statewide Press Secretary for a major-party gubernatorial campaign in Texas. In January, Rebecca received the Ellis Island Honors Society’s Beacon Award which recognizes young Americans, who are considered influencers, and demonstrate that immigrants are important contributors to the United States. Rebecca serves on the Board of Directors for the Workforce Solutions of Greater Dallas, The ChildCareGroup of Dallas, IGNITE Texas State Council, and the League of Women Voters of Greater Dallas where she is also a Co-Chair of the Susan B. Anthony Luncheon.

Colmenero’s and Acuña’s contributions to Dallas area Latinos will be recognized during a reception on October 10, 2018 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at Vouv Event Center located at 4445 Sigma Rd. in Dallas. The net proceeds benefit the H100 Latina Giving Circle

Past honorees of the Latina Living Legend award have included some of the most prominent Latina leaders in North Texas such as the honorable Anita N. Martinez, Gloria Campos, Adelfa B. Callejo, Dr. Gloria Contreras, Dolores Gomez Barzune, Dr. Catalina Garcia, Sheriff Lupe Valdez, Dr. Michele Bobadilla, Bea Salazar, and Mercedes Olivera who was honored posthumously.

16th Annual National LATINA Symposium to Recognize 13 Latina Heroes

 

Washington, D.C. – August 29, 2019 – LATINA Style Inc. in partnership with Parents Step Ahead (PSA) will host the 16th Annual National LATINA Symposium – a national platform for Latina professionals addressing the most pressing issues affecting the Hispanic woman in the United States – on Thursday, September 5th, 2019 from 7:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. at the Hilton Crystal City at Washington Reagan National in Washington, D.C. The conference is one of the most anticipated gatherings for Latinas in the country and serves as the launch of Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations in Washington, D.C. Since 2004, over 164 Hispanic women and two men have been recognized for their exemplary record and commitment to serve in our Nation’s Armed Services.

 

The Symposium features workshops on advancement in the workplace, successful leadership, global public service, applying military skills to everyday life and business, and the role a military spouse plays in their military career.

 

The highlight of the program is the Distinguished Military Service Award Luncheon. LATINA Style is proud to present the only national awards program honoring Latina military and civilian personnel who through their service have enhanced the role of Latinas in their organizations.

 

The 2019 Distinguished Military Service Award Recipients are:
